Why I would always return to Santa Catalina

I consider Santa Catalina one of those places you have to visit if you like relaxed or calm experiences, or if you want to feel the adrenaline of surfing or skating; it’s constantly evolving, but that doesn't stop it from being a very peaceful and safe place to enjoy the beach by day and the sunsets. And don't forget what you can find in the town itself and the people there.

I was there for a year for work, but I assure you that in less than two weeks you can live, get to know the people, have fun, learn, and have many different adventures if you set your mind to it. It has a steady flow of tourists, so the last thing you should worry about is the language. You can solve a problem immediately in English, and of course, Spanish. I can also add that there is no problem with long stays (months); I assure you that you won't get bored at any point, and if you do, let me know, so this small but warm town can continue to evolve.

Even though it's small and isolated, the community keeps moving forward. The treatment of tourists is very friendly and welcoming, and you'll feel at home even when you're not. Of course, let's not forget that we are all people and have our own personalities; everyone has a bad day. I'll just say that, personally, I never heard of any issues between a tourist and a Panamanian. We're not confrontational; we know when to be, lol.

All the foreigners I met said they planned to return at some point in their lives. Some even came back more than once in the same year, so you can see what you're missing. And why do they decide to return, even when there are other beautiful places in this country, like Bocas del Toro or Playa Venao?

My Experiences in Santa Catalina, Veraguas

Hiking the Trails

They are short, but magical. These trails show you some of the diverse fauna you can find in the area. You don't need a guide, but it's important to ask if the routes are open and to know their duration beforehand.

One is at La Punta or Point Surf. It has a picnic area where you can watch the beach and the surfers. You can also explore the surroundings and the abandoned houses there. It has no specific start or end point; it's a closed area.

The second one is called Sendero Estero. You can find it on Google Maps, but it's difficult for it to show you the route—if you find it, great! It’s a trail with synthetic wood platforms. The entrance is on the left before you get to Oceans Hostel, and the end point is Estero beach. It's very simple, but you should ask about the detours inside.

Spending the Afternoon at La Punta

It's very relaxing. Towards Estero beach, entering via Calle los Pibes. It's a private area accessible to tourists and locals who want to observe nature or simply go to the most challenging surf spot. It's accessible at any time of day for a picnic, exploring the area, or simply surfing—or just watching if you're not a surfer.

Exploring the Streets

It's important not to leave without getting to know all the corners of Santa Catalina, especially since it's a small town. Even if you're driving, it's recommended to take a walk through the center of town.

Fruits and Vegetables Are Very Accessible

You'll find a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in markets and shops, from the entrance of the town all the way to Estero Beach. Just remember not to confuse a banana with a plantain, and try the tree tomato if it's in season.

Horseback Riding in the Afternoons

Friendly People

Both foreigners and locals. As I mentioned before, you can find people from all over the world in every corner and social area, all with the purpose of relaxing and meeting new people to share experiences with.

The Food is Very Varied

Parties and Karaoke Every Weekend of the Year (Except for One Month)

If you want to have fun and have a good time at a beach party, I recommend Oasis Surf Camp. It's a beautiful place where you can play beach soccer or volleyball, have delicious drinks, and eat amazing artisanal Italian pizzas. Plus, everyone gets to know each other at the party at night, since it transforms into a disco bar right by the beach.
