It has 725 inhabitants in 2023 and covers an area of 136.0 km². Its average altitude is 250 m above sea level. The name is attributed to an indigenous cacique, suggesting a deep connection to the pre-Hispanic roots of the region.

Within Cativé are several communities, including El Cedral, Caña Blanca, La Pita, La Patriota, La Divisa, Catecito, El Llano and San Rafael.
